Your e-bike works hard. Here are the best ways to keep your e-bike in top shape for riding the Newport Beach coast.
Salty ocean air, sandy paths, stop-and-go boardwalk riding and the occasional Back Bay hill all add up. The good news? Your bike will usually tell you when it needs attention. You just have to know what to listen for.
Here are seven signs it's time for a tune-up, plus a quick safety check you can do before every ride.
1. Your Brakes Squeak, Feel Soft or Take Longer to Stop
Brakes are the most important safety feature on any bike, and e-bikes are heavier and faster than regular bikes, so they work harder. If your brake levers pull closer to the handlebar than they used to, you hear squealing or grinding, or stopping takes more distance, don't wait.
What we check: pad wear, rotor condition, cable or hydraulic adjustment, and lever feel.
2. Your Range Isn't What It Used to Be
If rides that used to be easy now leave you watching the battery meter, your battery or drivetrain may need attention. Battery capacity naturally declines over time, but underinflated tires, a dragging brake or a dirty chain can also drain it faster.
What we check: battery health and connections, charging habits, and anything creating extra drag.
3. Your Gears Skip or Your Chain Is Noisy (or Rusty)
Living by the beach is the dream, but salt air is tough on chains and gears. If your chain looks orange, sounds crunchy, or your gears slip when you pedal hard, your drivetrain needs cleaning, lubing or adjusting.
What we check: chain wear and lubrication, shifting adjustment, and cassette and chainring condition.
4. Your Tires Look Worn or Keep Losing Air
Flat spots, cracks, visible threads, or a tire you're pumping up every few days are all signs it's time to look closer. Proper tire pressure also makes a huge difference in comfort, handling, and range.
What we check: tread, sidewalls, tubes, pressure, and wheel true.
5. You Hear New Rattles, Clicks or Feel a Wobble
E-bikes have more parts than a regular bike: racks, fenders, baskets, battery mounts, and motors. Vibration can loosen bolts over time. A new rattle is your bike politely asking for a once-over.
What we check: every bolt torqued to spec, headset, bearings, racks, and accessories.
6. Your Display Shows Errors or the Motor Cuts In and Out
If your pedal assist feels jumpy, cuts out on bumps, or your display flashes an error code, there may be a loose connection or a sensor that needs attention. Don't ignore electrical hiccups.
What we check: wiring, connectors, sensors, display, and motor function.
7. It's Been a While Since Your Last Service
Even if everything feels fine, regular maintenance keeps small issues from becoming big, expensive ones. Our crew recommends a tune-up every 3-4 months if you ride daily or near the sand, and every 6-12 months if you ride more recreationally.
Bonus: Is Your E-Bike 2026-Compliant?
As of January 1, 2026, California requires e-bikes to have a rear red reflector, or a rear red light with a built-in reflector, at all hours, not just at night. Many older bikes don't have one. We're happy to check yours during any service visit and get you set up.
Your 5-Minute Pre-Ride Safety Check
Screenshot this one:
-
Brakes: squeeze both levers. They should feel firm and stop the wheel.
-
Tires: press with your thumb or check with a gauge.
-
Battery: charged enough for where you're headed.
-
Lights and reflector: on, clean, and visible.
-
Quick bounce: lift the bike a few inches and drop it gently. Listen for rattles.
