Ask any local, and they'll tell you: fall is the best-kept secret on the Orange County coast. The summer crowds thin out, the mornings are crisp, and the late-afternoon light turns the whole coastline gold. It's the perfect season to get out of the car, off the couch, and onto the path.
And there's no better way to see it than on an e-bike. You get all the fresh air and ocean views, with a little boost on the hills and headwinds, so you can ride farther, stop more often, and still have energy for tacos at the end.
Here are five of our crew's favorite fall rides, plus the October events worth riding to.
1. Newport Back Bay Loop
Best for: a relaxed morning ride with wildlife views. Distance: about 10.5 miles round trip
The Back Bay loop circles the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, one of the last coastal estuaries in Southern California. Expect wide-open marsh views, herons and egrets, and a gentle climb or two that your e-bike will make feel like nothing.
Fall is prime birdwatching season here, so bring your phone or camera (if you're fancy) for photos.
2. Balboa Peninsula Boardwalk
Best for: classic beach-town people-watching. Distance: 3–6 miles, depending on where you turn around
This is the ride that feels like a postcard. Cruise the boardwalk toward the Balboa Pier, past beach cottages, surf shops, and the Newport Pier.
Take it easy here. The boardwalk has an 8 mph speed limit, there's a walk-your-bike zone at the Newport Pier plaza, and bikes aren't allowed on the sand. Slow and scenic is the whole point anyway.
3. Balboa Island via the Ferry
Best for: a mini adventure. Distance: 2–4 miles, plus a ferry ride
Ride to the Balboa Fun Zone, roll your bike onto the Balboa Island Ferry, and enjoy the short hop across the harbor. On the island, loop the bayfront path past the charming cottages. Then grab a Balboa Bar or frozen banana, because it's the law. (Okay, not really, but it should be.)
4. Corona del Mar Coastal Cruise
Best for: ocean views and a lunch stop.
Head south into Corona del Mar for some of the prettiest views on the coast. Cruise the neighborhood streets along the bluffs, stop at Inspiration Point for the view over Corona del Mar State Beach, and roll through the village for lunch.
There are a few hills on this one, which is exactly where pedal assist shines.
5. Santa Ana River Trail
Best for: riders who want to go the distance Distance: ride as much or as little as you like; the trail runs about 30 miles inland
This paved, car-free trail starts near the beach at the Newport/Huntington border and follows the river inland. It's flat, well-marked, and great for building confidence or logging longer miles. Ride a few miles out and back, or make a day of it.
Crew tip: Check your battery before you go, and know your bike's range.

-
Check tire pressure
-
Make sure your battery is charged for the distance
-
Rear reflector or light on (California requires one at all hours now)
-
Helmet on and buckled
